Emergency Financial Resources

These organizations my be able to provide financial assistance with rental arrears, utility disconnection and security deposits:

Alberta Works – Utility Disconnection

• Assistance can be provided more than once - grant 1st time; maybe loan 2nd time

• Received a disconnection notice.

• Provide: 2 pieces of ID, proof of finances
• Application filled out on the spot; wait to be seen.

Red Cross – Utility Disconnection, Damage Deposit, Rental Arrears

• Assistance is one time only; grant.

• General Inquires: 541-6119

  Main Qualifications:

• At or below LICO.

• Facing absolute or relative homelessness. Families with children, women fleeing violence, mental health, physical disability, at risk youth or seniors, aboriginal or recent immigrant.
• Stable income (proof of 6 weeks) or alternate proof of sustainability
• Grant based on family size. Single $250.00; dependants assessed between $300 - $500. Max assistance: $500.00.

Salvation Army – Rental arrears, Damage Deposit, Utility Disconnection.

• Assistance is one time only.

  Main Qualifications:

• Proof if ID of all in household.

• For rent or damage deposit: signed lease b/w L.L and tenant.
• Budget of expenses.
• Proof of income – at least 3 pay stubs.
• Eviction notice/ letter or disconnection notice of utilities.

CUPS – 1st Month Rent or Security Deposit for Newly Acquired Housing

  Main Qualifications:

• Must be literally homeless for 30 days prior to submitting application.

• Proven sustainable income.
• First find a place to rent before application is submitted/ rent is reasonable for income.
• Have identification (letter from worker/ agency is acceptable).
• Special consideration given to: seniors over 60 yrs, severely disabled, those fleeing abuse, families with children.

Calgary Rent Bank - Momentum

The Calgary Rent Bank is an initiative that provides loans for families and individuals to help secure housing, prevents residential evictions and avoids termination of utilities. The Calgary Rent Bank provides loans for rent and utility arrears, as well as security rent deposits and utility deposits. Participants of the program are expected to repay their loan monthly over a 2-year period and participate in two money management workshops on topics such as budgeting, credit repair, asset building, and responsible consumerism. Loan interest is at 1.5% above prime, but is refunded to the client when the loan is paid back in full and when you have attended both of the 2-hour workshops.

• Maximum loan for rent is $600 for a single person and $1,200 for a family. Maximum utility loan is $600. Loan amount must clear entire arrears.

  Main Qualifications:

• Sufficient income to pay monthly rent, utilities and other basic expenses, in addition to repaying the Rent Bank loan

• If employed, can demonstrate ability to maintain employment (minimum 3 months)
• Respectful tenant (ie. No damages, sincere effort in trying to pay rent).
• Your total household income is at or below the following guidelines:

1 person - $20,778

2 people - $25,867

3 people - $31,801

4 people - $38,610

5 people - $43,791
